Census of the State of Illinois, 1820, Administrative Pages and Unspecified Counties

The census covers Administrative Pages and Unspecified Counties. Each county return includes name of county and for each household name of head of household, numbers of free white males twenty-one years of age or older, other white inhabitants, free people of color, servants, or slaves.

An Act providing for taking the Census of the Inhabitants of the State of Illinois, 1819

[Sect. 1.] Be it enacted by the people of the slate of Illinois represented in the general assembly. That there shall be appointed by the county commissioners in each and every county, at some session of their court, previous to the first day of August, one thousand eight hundred and twenty, some proper person, whose duty it shall be to take a list of all citizens, of all ages, and sexes, and color, within their respective counties, particularly noting whether white or black; and also noting particularly free male inhabitants above the age of twenty years.

An Act making Allowance for taking the Census for the Year 1820, 1821

[Sect.1.] Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly. That the following sums shall be allowed to the different County commissioners for taking the census of this stare for the year one thousand eight hundred and twenty, to wit : to the commissioner of Madison county, one hundred and seventy-one dollars: to the commissioner of St. Clair county, one hundred and five dollars: to the commissioner of Bond county, fifty-nine dollars : to the commissioner of Washington county, fifty dollars and fifty cents: to the commissioner of Monroe county, forty-three dollars and fifty cents : to the commissioner of Randolph county, seventy one dollars: to the commissioner of Franklin county, fifty dollars : to the commissioner of Union county, fifty dollars

An Act for the relief of persons taking additional census for the late territory of Illinois, 1819

[Sect. 1.] Be it enacted by the people of the state of Illinois represented in the general assembly, That there shall be paid to the person or his legal representatives, for taking the additional census for the county of Washington, the sum of twenty dollars.; to the.person or his legal representatives, for taking the additional census for the county of Madison, the sum of thirty dollars ; to the person or his legal representatives, for taking the additional census for the county of St. Clair, the sum of thirty dollars; to the person or his legal representatives, for taking the additional census for the county of Monroe, the sum of twenty dollars

Returns are included for the following counties: Alexander, Bond, Clark, Crawford, Franklin, Gallatin, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Madison, Monroe, Pope, Randolph, St. Clair, Union, Washington, Wayne, and White. A summary account which lists no individual names also is included for Edwards County. The census was taken to count the number of all citizens including all ages, sexes, and colour. The enumerators were instructed to particularly note free male inhabitants over the age of 20.
